RIBA CPD Showcase

Electrical systems

The following CPD materials have been assessed and approved by the RIBA.
This CPD presentation covers: roof build up options and their pros and cons, installation methods, waterproofing, detailing, profile options (bespoke fabrications), roof gardens, solar PV, roof edge protection and liquid applied waterproofing.

ICB promotes the idea of improving the environment by using sustainable products and making good, sustainable use of roof spaces. This may be achieved through: adding a green roof construction to encourage local biodiversity, the installation of roof-mounted solar PV to produce clean renewable energy, or simply by waterproofing and insulating the roof to a high standard.

Seminar, by OE Electrics Ltd
An introduction to the general rules and regulations when installing electrics into furniture for use in office and educational environments. This seminar explores and explains the ‘best practice’ of following BS6396, enabling delegates to specify electrics with confidence. BS6396 applies to electrical installations in office and educational furniture when connecting to the supply via a 13A plug complying with BS1363 – the standard UK square-pin plug. Delegates will be able to differentiate between a BS6396 and BS7671 specification, using tried and tested rules. This CPD seminar is essential for anyone specifying furniture into offices and educational projects, as following BS6396 will help specifiers comply with statutory laws such as the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

OE Electrics, founded in 1986, operates a policy of “service – quality – safety”. This has resulted in it achieving a highly respected reputation within the commercial office soft wiring and cable management industry, providing cost-effective and innovative ‘solutions by design’. A family owned and managed business, one of OE Electrics’ fundamental principles is that people matter, because “…it is the people we work with: our customers, suppliers, and of course our staff – that make everything possible!” Internationally recognised accreditations, such as ISO9001 and ISO4001, coupled with the fact that it manufactures exclusively in the UK, make OE Electrics the ideal choice for all office or educational electrical requirements.

Seminar, by ERCO Lighting Ltd
This seminar covers how LEDs produce light, i.e. their basic composition, before addressing many common questions relating to lifetime claims and supposed ‘future-proof’ technology. Fundamentally, the presentation will prove and/or disprove notions about LED. It will help the specifier to understand how light and architecture come together in the new digital world, and provide a greater understanding and confidence in this subject.

ERCO Lighting is now a 100% LED company, which may provide a clue as to its expertise and development in the new digital age. ERCO Lighting talks about “light, not luminaires”, which is its way of showing how artificial light can help interpret architecture and space. The company offers expert advice and guidance in person and via its highly-acclaimed website.

Approximate duration excluding time for questions/answers: 35-40 minutes
This seminar aims to show architects the power of light as a design tool. This is done by demonstrating how LED technology can be completely integrated into projects, giving buildings and urban spaces a new night-time identity. The presentation also highlights present and future developments in LED technology and optical design.
