This CPD seminar should ideally be viewed as a continuation of part 01, although it also works as a standalone seminar in its own right.

While the testing of various mechanical and physical properties using mock-ups has been common practice for some time, their use in fire tests has been the subject of much discussion in the recent years. This CPD seminar explores British test methods using large-scale mock-ups to BS 8414, and will help draw a correlation between small scale reaction to fire material test reports and large scale tests. It also explains when and how large scale tests become vital and how to use them effectively. Finally, it addresses the subject of engineering judgements and standards such as BS 9414, which has been published recently.

When choosing materials for rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms – or indeed any space that has contact with water or may be affected by increased humidity – damp proofing is highly recommended. The type of damp proofing needed is closely linked to the moisture load and room or building designation. The wrong choice of materials and methods of application in wet zones can cause immense damage, such as tiles coming off, paint flaking, crystallising salt and even fungus. This article explains how to distinguish between wet, damp and dry zones in a room, how to choose appropriate products and then how to apply them correctly.
