Building conservation and heritage
The following materials fall within the ‘Building conservation and heritage’ RIBA Core Curriculum subject area. This covers understanding the legislative framework and principles of conservation practice, including having the right knowledge, skills and techniques (or access to the right specialists), to work on conservation projects and historic or listed buildings and places.

A brief introduction to bricks, including their history, methods of manufacture and technical characteristics – allowing the specifier to select the right brick for the correct application. Covers: the heritage and longevity of clay facing bricks; how to identify brick types by their manufacturing method; the technical properties of a brick (including sizing, tolerances, range, frost rating, salts and compressive strength); how to select bricks based on the geography and topography of a site; and, the importance of bond pattern, mortar selection, site practice and your working relationship with the site contractor in achieving the desired finish.

A seminar designed to offer a greater appreciation of the history and manufacture of lime and to give the architect the confidence to specify the material correctly. Includes guidance on the properties and benefits of lime, the different types of lime, and how to choose and apply limes and mortars correctly.
