RIBA CPD Showcase

Core Curriculum: Context

One of two RIBA core curriculum subjects featured in this issue. ‘Context‘ covers topics such as: legislation and published governmental and other guidance relevant to historic assets; planning and conservation acts, guidance and processes; materials, technology and the building environment; social, environmental and financial issues; implementation and management of conservation works, and; the impact of known or suspected archaeological sites on building.
This seminar describes, stage by stage, the practical processes involved in a stone conservation contract, from understanding the common mechanisms of stone decay, through assessing the repair techniques available, to selecting the correct replacement stone. It also highlights the questions architects need to ask, and decisions they must make, in the course of specifying stone repair.

Wells Cathedral Stonemasons works closely with architects on restoration, conservation and new build, and believes the sensitive nature of much of the work demands an integrated approach. To this end the company provides clients with a comprehensive design and consultancy service, which ensures that the contract proceeds smoothly and efficiently from initial survey through to installation.
