RIBA CPD Showcase

Designing and building it

The following CPD materials fall within the ‘Designing and building it – structural design, construction, technology and engineering’ RIBA Core Curriculum topic area.
This CPD presentation examines the importance of insulation and how the use of architectural insulation modules in curtain wall construction can contribute toward significant improvements in the overall thermal performance of a façade, while offering aesthetic and space-saving advantages through slender design and seamless integration.

Dow Corning is a leader in silicon-based technology, with a versatility and unique potential to solve some of the most important challenges facing us today. Silicones make existing materials work better, longer and more reliably. Within high performance construction, they outperform and outlast most organic materials and protect the structural integrity of buildings, enabling architects to create more energy-efficient, people-friendly designs.

When building with ICF (Insulated Concrete Formwork), low energy architecture doesn’t have to equate to design limitations. This CPD seminar answers the question, “What is Insulated Concrete Formwork?” before covering the different types of ICF and their benefits, design capabilities, building types and applications, the construction process, regulations and standards, sustainable advantages (BREEAM/CSH/LEED) and useful design resources, including BIM. It also includes a case study featuring an award-winning project.

NUDURA’s unique ICF technology creates limitless possibilities for designing low-energy buildings, speeds up the construction process and reduces waste. NUDURA is a global leader in the design and manufacture of ICF products for residential, commercial, municipal buildings and many other structure types that need minimal maintenance and that benefit from improved indoor air quality.

Seminar, by Binns
This seminar examines different materials, finishes and how to make changing room spaces as flexible as possible. Also includes case studies and examples of what to avoid.

A J Binns has been a family-owned and run manufacturer since 1937. It has a long history of manufacturing and installing high quality cloakroom furniture. Its UK-manufactured products have been designed by award-winning British and Italian designers.

Seminar, by Ty-Mawr Lime Ltd
This seminar has been designed to raise awareness of the significance of vapour permeable building materials, adjust preconceptions about use of lime as a ‘dark art’ or ‘yesterday's material’, inform specifiers about the different types of lime available and their range of applications, and enable them to make informed choices on the specification of mortars, plasters, floor products and lime-wasters.

The ongoing renovation work at Ty-Mawr provides real examples of how these materials can be used.

Established in 1995 by husband and wife team Nigel and Joyce Gervis, Ty-Mawr Lime Ltd has made an enormous contribution to resurrecting the use of traditional building materials in Wales. Today, it’s a market leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of environmentally-friendly building materials and systems, providing a one-stop shop to clients throughout the UK.

Seminar, by The Rooflight Co.
This presentation features a series of scenarios in which architects have required rooflighting, before presenting design solutions that addressed their various requirements. It is a seminar aimed at all those who believe in the importance of external and internal building aesthetics, and that architectural designs and interventions should always be in context and executed with the lightest of touches, regardless of genre.

Founded by an architect, The Rooflight Company has a unique understanding of the wants and needs of architects, alongside an appreciation of the importance of aesthetics. That’s why its ranges are designed to complement the overall building design, providing an unobtrusive finish both internally and externally. The Rooflight Company has a team of in-house designers that works in close collaboration with its clients to create skylight designs to suit both aesthetic and performance criteria.

This CPD seminar clearly defines applications for both external and internal board products, and the differences between types of base material relative to the specification and application. It includes information on the relevant accreditations and testing standards that the specifier should aim for when considering performance and suitability relative to their project. Ultimately, it aims to provide the external façade designer with a technical understanding of the use and compatibility of building boards.

Established in 2004, RCM Ltd is a major manufacturer and supplier of specialist building boards and external cladding. RCM recognises the importance of testing, and therefore tests to BS and EN standards. It offers over 80 years of collective experience within construction related industries, and provides technical support and site visits.
