Living spaces

Our wellbeing and how we live, work and interact with one another can all be greatly affected by the spaces we occupy. The recognition that different ages and physical or mental abilities may demand different approaches to designing those spaces has inspired some truly mesmerising advances in building design and technology. A lot is known about the properties of colour and their effect on human behaviour, but what of the medium that transports colour to us: light? This presentation details the advantages and disadvantages of the LED revolution. It covers: the non-visual effects of colour; the beneficial (and detrimental) physiological and health effects of lighting systems; the relationship and use of the non-visual effects of colour in the built environment; the role and importance of transmission, created by a light fixture, in realizing the design intent; and, how to evaluate a lighting fixture both in terms of light quality and how that will affect design.

Architects are now used to specifying LED light fittings but there are still some knowledge gaps when it comes to understanding how light can affect our spaces and moods. The colour of light can detrimentally affect our circadian rhythm, an example being too much and the wrong colour of light at night. This seminar looks at how to design human centric lighting.
