Core Curriculum: Designing and building it

…Or ‘Designing and building it – structural design, construction, technology and engineering’, to give it its full RIBA Core Curriculum heading, covers a broad range of subject areas, from wastewater treatment to the building access implications of The Equality Act. Here is a selection.
This informative presentation is designed to provide architects and specifiers with appropriate information to ensure equal access for all users when entering public and commercial buildings. It addresses the key considerations as defined by The Equality Act 2010, BS8300 2009 – The design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people, BS7036;1996 – Safety at powered doors for pedestrian use and Part M 2013.

A CPD presentation that examines what constitutes 'best sign practice' and how good signage helps everyone – not just those with disabilities. It covers: how signage for the disabled can be well intentioned yet unhelpful, choice of typography and colourways to aid legibility, why layout of information on a sign is so important, helpful and misleading symbols and arrows, plus a case study featuring Whitley Court. This offers some good examples of what signs look like when they are specifically designed to assist a variety of visitors with different disabilities.
