RIBA CPD Showcase

Green applications and resources

Here are a trio of CPD seminars and course covering photovoltaics, zero energy housing concepts and use of timber.
Seminar, by WWF-UK
This seminar highlights the role that specifiers can play in helping to deliver sustainability in the market for credibly certified forest producers. WWF seminars are free of charge, and are available to all architects anywhere in the UK including at RIBA meetings and at individual practices.

By participating in a WWF RIBA CPD seminar, architects can expect to hear about the threat posed by illegal and unsustainable logging, the work WWF undertakes to help combat this threat, and what people designing and specifying for the built environment can do to play their part in a more sustainable future for forest resources and habitats. Attendees are given an overview of responsible forest management and how they can make a positive difference through the choices they make. WWF also provides insight into the benefits of specifying for lesser known tropical timber species over the more traditional and overharvested species.

WWF is one of the world's largest conservation organizations. Its mission is to stop the degradation of the planet's natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature, by conserving the world's biological diversity, ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable, and promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption.
Seminar, by Axter Ltd
Covers understanding photovoltaic (PV) technology, the benefits of PV systems, how to calculate expected power output of different products, how the technology responds to government requirements, financial incentives of inclusion of PV into buildings, and how PV can be integrated into buildings.

Axter is a quality designer and supplier of waterproofing and insulation systems on refurbishment and new build projects. These include specifications for accessible and inaccessible low slope roofing, integrated photovoltaic roofing, green roofs, structural waterproofing and podium decks including car parking. Their free technical design and site monitoring service is backed by long term guarantees.
Online Learning, by Boston Architectural College
This course explores the definitions of 'zero energy' and its implications at the bioregional, local, and site levels. Energy loads and the opportunities to reduce them are explained. Occupants' behaviour in the home, critical to a successful energy outcome, and data from case studies is examined. Building orientation, thermal envelope, renewable energy systems that produce, and HVAC systems that consume are investigated for case studies and theoretical projects.

The Boston Architectural College (BAC) is a fully-accredited design school, offering bachelors and masters degrees in architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and design studies from its campus in Boston, Massachusetts (USA). The 'Sustainable Design Program' at the BAC offers courses, certificates and a masters degree online.
