RIBA CPD Showcase

Windows and rooflights

The interplay between light and dark, and sun and shade, are as much a part of building design as the interaction between bricks, wood and steel. Here are five seminars from Providers whose passion burns as brightly as the daylight their designs let in.
This CPD seminar provides an insight into building low energy and PassivHaus standard properties. It begins with background information on Internorm, followed by a good explanation as to what PassivHaus is and the key principles behind it. The presentation then provides a sound explanation on the role windows and doors play in gaining PassivHaus, followed by some recent examples that have utilised Internorm products to achieve this extremely high level of efficiency. Featuring a wealth of data and illustration, attendees will gain a thorough understanding of the standard.

For over 80 years Internorm has been the Austrian market leader in the manufacture of UPVC and UPVC/aluminium windows, timber/aluminium windows, composite windows, house entrance doors, window shutters and insulating glass. In addition to a comprehensive range of products and trend-setting designs, Internorm represents the highest competency in energy efficiency, with its high thermal insulation products. It is the only window brand in Europe with 9 Passivhaus certificates.
Rooflights have an important role to play in ensuring that buildings meet their CO2 emissions targets, as stipulated by Part L of the Building Regulations (England and Wales). This seminar provides guidance on specifying rooflights to meet regulatory and industry requirements, and offers practical advice on specifying rooflights for all roof types using inspirational case study examples.

Brett Martin Daylight is a designer, manufacturer and supplier of the widest range of rooflights available, covering all roof types and both industrial and commercial sectors. With over 50 years’ experience the company is the only European manufacturer of all the main rooflight plastic glazing materials and provides impartial advice on the best rooflight type for each application – as well as full technical support.
Seminar, by APA Systems Ltd
The learning aim of this CPD is to show how to evaluate a proposed window system against project requirements and specifications, taking into account the thermal, permitted air leakage, size of sashes, structural performance, surface finishes and finally sash type for free area ventilation criteria.

Under the ethos of continuous improvement APA has developed expertise in many areas of fenestration and façade construction. Having been involved in so many projects the company has built up an expert technical crew, capable of supporting architects in the development of specifications, interface details and thermal evaluations, together with structural analysis and the environmental aspects of any project.
