RIBA Core Curriculum: Climate

The following CPD materials fall within the ‘Climate: sustainable architecture’ RIBA Core Curriculum topic area.
Seminar, by Rockwool Rockshell
This CPD module aims to introduce steel frame and stone wool wall systems as a viable alternative to traditional building methods. It explains the need for low-energy buildings, and briefly demonstrates effective low-energy building design and how to integrate and interface steel frame and stone wool systems.

ROCKWOOL makes and supplies a full range of smart and sustainable insulation products for the construction industry, based on innovative stone wool technology.

ROCKWOOL’s unique combination of outstanding fire, acoustic and thermal insulation properties, as well as unrivalled sustainability credentials, has seen its products installed in domestic, commercial and industrial buildings of all types.

Approximate duration excluding time for questions/answers: one hour
This seminar answers two key questions: “What are the drivers for regulations changes?” and “What are the connections between Part L and CHS?” It also discusses the key factors in fabric performance, and the road to the future – zero carbon.

Xtratherm is a leading insulation manufacturer of high performance thermal insulation materials such as PIR, Phenolic and EPS, with factories in the UK, Ireland and Belgium. It prides itself on its dedicated technical support and has gone out of its way to train every one of its technical team to the highest standards of competency in U-value calculation and condensation risk.

This CPD seminar explores the demands of shared bathroom facilities, requirements for water conservation, and how to achieve a sustainable and economical commercial washroom with manually-operated time-flow taps and shower controls. It also covers the important criteria when specifying time-flow controls for sinks and showers, and includes information on alternative solutions for specialist areas. Examples of the types of product described are provided.

Part of the Reliance Worldwide Corporation, Reliance Water Controls Ltd provides technology for the sanitary, plumbing and heating industries. Its key expertise is in the areas of controlling water temperature, pressure and flow. Reliance's range includes products recognised on the Water Technology List run by Defra, for promoting efficient use of water.

Seminar, by Tata Steel
This CPD seminar covers the details of the changes to Part L in terms both of the role of the building envelope and the effect that they have on the specification process. It includes an assessment of the influence of building envelope parameters on Part L calculations, the impact of detailing, and a discussion on cost-effective routes to gaining compliance.

Tata Steel has nearly 50 years’ experience in the manufacture of pre-finished steel for the building envelope through its Colorcoat brand. During this time it has developed a deep understanding of all aspects of building envelope design and construction, through working with specifiers on optimal project solutions and through technical collaborations with Oxford Brookes University and the Steel Construction Institute.
