Seminar, by RIBA Journal
Thursday 19th November 2015, 08.50 to 12.30pm
The Building Centre, Store Street, London WC1E 7BT

Health and safety in construction requires a mature approach with the CDM 2015 regulations, and the principal designer role represents both a turning point in that journey and a step in the right direction. The design world has a significant part to play in advancing health and safety. This morning seminar will take a fresh proactive look at CDM 2015 and the impact it and the principal designer will have.

With architects the most appropriate candidates for the principal designer role, this seminar explains: what the principal designer is and does; how and why we got to CDM 2015; how it works in practice (in both large and small practices); what the challenges and responsibilities are; the principal designer’s proportionate approach to CDM; how to focus on outcomes rather than paperwork risk assessments; the legal implications (PI insurance) and; how one can earn significant fees by simple integration with normal design processes.

Seminar speakers will include:

• Peter Caplehorn, Deputy Chief Executive and Policy Director, Construction Products Association
• Kizzy Augustin, Senior Associate, Pinsent Masons
• Peter Baker, Chief Inspector of Construction, FOD Construction Division, Health & Safety Executive
• Paul Bussey, Associate, Scott Brownrigg
• Nigel Ostime, Project Delivery Director, Hawkins\Brown, author of the RIBA Small Projects Handbook
• Clive Johnson, Group Head of Health and Safety, Land Securities
• Tony Putsman, Vice Chair, Health and Safety Panel, Construction Industry Council
• Andrew Leslie, Technical and Standards Manager, Association for Project Safety (APS)
