RIBA Core Curriculum: Designing & building it

The following CPD materials fall within the ‘Designing and building it – structural design, construction, technology and engineering’ RIBA Core Curriculum topic area.
Guidance on designing masonry constructions with BREEAM and CSH in mind, including relevant product standards, detailing, movement control and manual handing considerations.

Aggregate Industries is a leading player in the construction industry, committed to creating a better built environment through sustainable approaches. The company supplies and manufactures reconstituted stone walling blocks for interior and exterior applications, offering a wide selection of profiles and finishes for use in structural building, as well as civil engineering applications where a high-quality, aesthetically-pleasing choice of material is needed.

Seminar, by alsecco (UK) Ltd
This seminar compares handset stone and lightweight stone ventilated rainscreen cladding. It then considers the requirements of modern architecture and how this has had an influence on these traditional construction methods. Finally, it indicates how to specify robust lightweight stone façades by outlining the requirements, features and benefits of ventilated rainscreen cladding, using projects to highlight specific elements of interest.

Alsecco is one of the leading façade manufacturers and suppliers in the UK, with a broad system portfolio including external wall insulation, solid wall insulation solutions, rainscreen cladding and render-only solutions.

This seminar offers a concise overview of SuDS, with particular focus on permeable paving. It includes guidance on: water quality and pollution control; SuDS legislation and new planning requirements; design and construction methods – using case studies; further development of permeable paving in rainwater harvesting and; utilising paving for geothermal heat generation.

Formpave manufactures a wide range of standard and specialist concrete block pavers, permeable pavers, kerb systems and ancillaries for all paving applications. Formpave has BS EN ISO 9001:2008 Quality Assurance accreditation and is a BSI registered company. Established in 1989, it specialises in surface water management and has over 20 years’ experience in designing permeable paving systems.

Formpave offers a free bespoke design service, working closely with architects and engineers, from concept to completion.

Modern façades are becoming more complex and combining different types of cladding. There is a need for a more detailed, structured and collaborative approach to rainscreen cladding support systems specification, procurement and installation. Fluent communication between architect, specialist cladding contractor and the material and rainscreen support systems manufacturer is crucial. It’s a serious business and support systems need to be ‘fit for purpose’.

This seminar discusses the issues that need to be considered when creating a safe and efficient support structure, and presents an approach that takes into account both the specifier and installer’s needs.

NVELOPE is a UK manufacturer of rainscreen cladding support systems. Its systems are based on NV vertical and NH horizontal helping hand brackets and a range of NVELOPE vertically and horizontally fixed profiles.

NVELOPE can be used to support HPL, timber, fibre cement, ceramic, thin stone, metal, ACM and glass.

NVELOPE will assist with static calculations, systems optimisation and £/m2 rates with its 'Project Builder' service.

This seminar offers an overview of roof system types and key design criteria, including drainage and thermal performance. It covers single ply membrane types, applications and methods of attachment, criteria for product selection (including product performance, design support, training and inspection), and integration of renewables and green roofing.

Single Ply Roofing Association (SPRA) has set the technical standards for UK single ply membrane technology since 1988. Combining manufacturers of membranes and associated components with the specialists who install them, allows rules to be set and audited for the supply chain, thus raising standards and reducing risk to clients, designers and main contractors.
SPRA’s technical service provides independent advice and investigation.

Seminar, by Anhydritec Ltd
This CPD seminar examines the environmental impact that different screed types have on the world we live in. It also looks at different build systems, and how to best specify screed at the correct thickness, and strength, for the requirements of the building. A significant section of the seminar is devoted to discussing the use of screeds with underfloor heating, and the most cost-effective systems for this growing market.

Anhydritec UK is a market-leading manufacturer of calcium sulphate screeds. It developed the UK’s first screed for use with underfloor heating (minimum cover over pipes of 40mm), and among its latest developments is a thin section screed for the renovation market (12-30mm thick). Anhydritec continues to lead the UK development of anhydrite screeds. Keep an eye out for new products scheduled for launch in 2016.
