Overview

Interface, Inc. is a global commercial flooring company with an integrated collection of carpet tiles and resilient flooring, including luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and nora® rubber flooring. Our modular system helps customers create interior spaces while positively impacting the people who use them and our planet. We are on a mission to lower the carbon footprint of your space. Guided by materials science, we’ve added new thinking and innovative new materials to make backings with a much lower carbon footprint. First, we added new bio-based materials, and more recycled content to our backings. Then, we measured how these materials influence the carbon footprint. These new materials, measured on a stand-alone basis, are net carbon negative – greatly reducing our carbon footprint. Our mission, Climate Take Back™, invites the industry to join us as we commit to running our business in a way that is restorative to the planet and creates a climate fit for life.

This aim of this material is to provide some clarity when it comes to the acoustic properties of flooring:
It will cover the following:
- The basics of acoustics and why it’s important to consider acoustics at the design stage and so select the right materials.
- Acoustic tests, which for flooring are sound absorption and impact sound transmission
- key technical terms are explained to help cut through some of the confusion about acoustic results and manufacturers claims.
- Typical acoustic results for flooring and how that can contribute to the acoustics of a space relative to other surfaces (materials).

Creating Positive Spaces by Designing for Community
The CPD aims to develop understanding of human centred design beyond health and wellbeing to a recognition that the formation of stronger resilient communities are an essential and valuable part of our life in the built environment. It explores what communities are past, present and future, then lists the essential elements that are needed to form them. This learning will then be connected to explain how an enhanced connection to nature puts us in a more positive and optimistic state of mind, one where we are more likely to share a conversation and ideas. 7 key features for enhancing communities through Biophilic Design are developed from this, to encourage mixing, mingling and connecting in the built environment. By the end of the CPD you should have a greater understanding of:
- The elements needed to create a strong resilient community.
The business benefit to creating designs that support and develop communities.
- Which market leaders are doing this well
- Stephen Kellert's socio-psychological approach to biophilic design.
- How to recognise and be able to implement the 7 features for enhancing community using biophilic design

Biophilic Design - Designing with Human Nature in Mind
This presentation investigates the new global movement looking at the concept of biophilic design. This involves and spans lots of disciplines, architecture, landscape, interiors, art and includes our public health and national education policy.

The concept of Biophilia looks at human beings instinctive and genetically based need to affiliate with nature and supports the belief that:

- We maintain a connection with ourselves through nature
- To reach our full creative potential we need sensory stimulation
- To heal faster we need natural light
- To learn better we need exposure to order and complexity
- To achieve sustainability, we need to cultivate a deep love for life

Exploring Carbon and the Built Environment
This CPD will explore carbon in the built environment. Topics discussed include the effect of carbon on climate change, the impact of the built environment on global carbon footprint, the difference between embodied carbon and operational carbon, and how to design with carbon in mind. By the end of the CPD you should have a greater understanding of:
- Why we need to take action to reduce negative impacts of carbon in the built environment
- How, if used correctly, carbon can be used in a positive way
-The different initiatives at global, national, regional and industry specific levels to combat climate change
- Market leaders which are leading this conversation by action
-The tools available to measure the embodied carbon of a design/specification

Health and Wellness in the Built Environment: An Introduction to WELL V2
This CPD explores the role buildings can play in human health and well-being, a subject which is increasingly evident and vitally important in today's world. It gives a full overview of the updated WELL Building Standard: V2 and aims to educate participants on strategies to create spaces that enhance, rather than hinder, health and well-being.

Innovation Inspired by Nature
The subject of this seminar is biomimicry, the study of learning from nature to solve problems in design, in business and in life. The core principle is that nature offers a sustainable solution to human problems. After 3.8 billion years in existence, it is clearly a system that works. This seminar has been inspired by a workshop collaboration carried out at InterfaceFLOR back in 1994 to develop new and inspiring products.
