Places, planning and communities

The following RIBA-approved CPD materials fall within the RIBA core curriculum topic ‘Places, planning and communities’ (and may fall within other core curriculum topics as well). This covers the legal, regulatory and policy frameworks for creating successful urban and rural places, and the relevant planning processes and procedures. It also includes having the knowledge and skills to create successful buildings, within the context of neighbourhoods, towns and cities. Online Learning, by AccuCities
Provides an overview of various digital 3D city modelling types, including examples used in architecture, urban planning and construction. A useful presentation for those wanting to know more about extruded buildings footprint polygons 3D maps, airborne lidar, aerial photogrammetry, textured photogrammetry and non-GIS game-ready models.

AccuCities is a specialist 3D city modelling agency. It captures photogrammetric 3D city models of the as-built environment, both in CAD solid and textured formats, providing accurate and detailed 3D models of London and other UK cities for architects and planners. An indepth look at human-centred design that explores past, present and future communities and discusses the elements needed to form them. An enhanced connection to nature puts us all in a more positive state of mind where we are more likely to share conversations and ideas. Seven key features for enhancing communities through biophilic design are developed from this, and explored here.

Seminar, by Tarkett
Alzheimer facilities are becoming a public health policy priority for the UK. Suitable medical treatment is central to quality care, but a comfortable environment is also closely linked to patient wellbeing. This presentation provides guidance on planning interior spaces adapted for the care of people with Alzheimer, focussing on interior design, flooring and colour.

Seminar, by Secured by Design
Explores and explains the police ‘Secured by Design’ scheme. Topics covered include how the scheme is implemented, successes in previous development projects, terminology and how to find secured products that have achieved police preferred specification.

Secured by Design focuses on crime prevention for homes and commercial premises and promotes security standards for a wide range of applications and products. These principles have been proven to reduce crime risk by up to 60%, by combining standards of physical security and principles of surveillance and defensible space.
Seminar, by Geofabrics Ltd
Explains the basic structure of different geotextiles and how changes to those structures can impact performance properties. Also examines UK and European regulatory frameworks, geotextile testing methods and how test results should be interpreted against performance.
